The Gift of Multiplication for the Holidays

My students always need extra practice with multiplication, so this year I thought I’d give them the gift of multiplication for the holidays!

Alright, so it may not be a really gift, and it may not be one that they will really scream with delight over, but it will definitely give them some practice on their multiplication! When it’s complete, it will also make an adorable hallway display!

I decided I was going to give the gift of multiplication by giving each child a square piece of white card stock and colored bows and ribbons that I had copied on the copy machine with construction paper. Then, I had students draw out of a hat multiplication equations that they needed to complete. After they constructed their gift of multiplication – gluing the bow on top, crossing the ribbon on the square card stock to form four equal boxes, and writing their multiplication number in the middle where the ribbons crossed, I had them begin their multiplication strategies.

In each box, they needed to represent the multiplication equation they were given. In one box they could represent it using repeated addition; in another box, they could represent it using equal groups; in yet another box, they could represent it using an array; and finally, in the last box, they could represent it using skip counting (we use number lines to represent that).

They ended up being adorable! It was great practice, and many students did more than one gift of multiplication!
